A Grief So Deep (7x15)

Artist Statement

My objective is to combine imagery from very diverse sources and then forge something completely different - where color, shape, and texture rule.

Inspiration comes from nature, especially my garden, as well as impressions from extensive travels. I partially obscure and distort the original images, creating richly layered, abstract impressions, but always leaving something familiar as an anchor.

The world around us contains so many mysteries to be uncovered, both by looking closely at what is hidden or by magnifying the familiar. Commentary pertaining to social and emotional issues has also claimed a place in my work, as has my lifelong love of music.

Having sampled a number of different techniques over the years, my current prints have evolved to employ a combination of hand-pulled etchings fused with a separately printed digital layer, a procedure I detailed in Printmaking Today, Winter Issue, 2006. Most often my prints are either unique or part of a very small or varied edition.
